MULU NATIONAL PARK NATURE TOUR

Welcome to one of Malaysia’s first World Heritage site designated by UNESCO in December 2000 – MULU NATIONAL PARK! Read through the introduction of this park and its 4 Show Caves before reading the various Nature Tours offered by our Company at the end of the blog.

MULU NATIONAL PARK is Sarawak’s largest national park, covering an area of 544sq km. The park contains Sarawak’s second-largest peak, Gunung Mulu, a sandstone outcrop standing at 2,376 meters. There is also the 1,750 meters Gunung Api, an impressive limestone outcrop. The park is noted for its diverse vegetation which varies from peak swamp to limestone and forest terrain. This national park contains about 1,500 species of flowering plants, including 10 species of the famous pitcher plant.

Mulu National Park is home to one of the largest networks of caves in the world. Its 4 Show Caves were selected for their uniqueness and sheer beauty. The LANG’S CAVE, the smallest of the Show Caves, has a spectacular display of stalactites, stalagmites, helictites, shawls and rimstone pool. The geological development was influenced more by the action of standing ground water dissolving the limestone rather than an active stream passage eroding it.
Lang's Cave
100meters away from Lang’s Cave discover the differences of DEER CAVE, the world’s largest cave passage and the biggest Show Caves. It is simply huge – it is just over 2 kilometres in length and never less than 90 meters high and wide. The main chamber, 174 meters wide and 122 meters high, can fit five cathedrals the size of Saint Paul’s in London. Here lies the world’s largest underground chamber, the Sarawak Chamber, capable of accommodating forty Boeing 747 airplanes. Not surprisingly, the Deer Cave is home to millions of bats and cave swiftlets that swarm out into the jungle in great clouds in search of food every evening at dusk! For avid photographer, be on the lookout for ‘the Garden of Eden’ where a hole in the cave roof lets in a shaft of light which allows the rich green vegetation to thrive. Another feature is the famous profile of Abraham Lincoln which guards the southern entrance of the cave.
Deer Cave
Wind Cave and Clearwater Cave are situated in the Gunung Api section of the Melinau limestone. Upon entering the WIND CAVE, which is part of Clearwater Cave system, you will feel its cooling breeze as you walk through it because it no longer has an active river flowing through it but evidence of the river is all around you. This dry river passage leads you to the ‘Kings Chamber’ with a particularly special display of stalagmites and columns.
Wind Cave
From Wind Cave, you can either follow a plank walk or take a boat to a picnic area near the entrance of CLEARWATER CAVE. The short walk provides an opportunity to enjoy views of the Clearwater River and the unique flora that grows on the limestone cliffs. Alternatively to reach Clearwater Cave, you can trek along a 4km nature trail which takes approximately one and half hours. Be ready to climb the 200 steps that lead up through the forest to the entrance of the Clearwater Cave. This Cave is Asia’s longest cave named for the crystal clear river that flows through 108km of cave passages in this system. With its underground river, Clearwater is a fascinating cave to stroll around by plank walks, paths and small floating bridges. The less energetic can relax on the picnic beaches at crystal clear pool that is filled with water that flows out of the cave.
