Pulau Payar Marine Park is the only dive spot in the West Coast of the Peninsular Malaysia. This Marine Park is 32 nautical miles north of Pulau Pinang and 19 nautical miles south of Pulau Langkawi consists of Pulau Payar, Pulau Kaca, Pulau Lembu and Pulau Segantang. Marine park is an area of the sea zone two nautical miles from the shore at lowest low tide as a sanctuary for the protection of its marine ecosystem especially coral reefs and its fauna and flora. Visitors to the Marine Park will be required to pay Conservation fee of RM 5.00 per adult and RM 2.00 per senior citizen of more than 56 years old, disabled person of all ages and children aged between 6 and 12 years old. The proceeds are used towards the sustainable management and maintenance of the Marine Park facilities for the convenience to visitors, maintain enhance marine resources for present and future economic activities and also for research and natural educational field for learning.
Being a marine park means that you are prohibited to do the followings:
· Fish hunting using any means
· Spear or sling fishing including by those licensed to do so
· Coral or shells or other marine organisms collection
· Collecting sand, dead corals or dead shells
· Polluting and littering
· Anchoring on reefs. Please use mooring buoys prepared by park authorities
· Building or erecting any type of structure on the water
· Bringing or importing non-native plants or animals
· Boating exceeding 10 knots
· Harassing any type of marine animals, including large marine mammals and fishes
Between 4 June and 19 July 2010, The Marine Park Department had conducted checks on the status of coral bleaching in Pulau Payar, Pulau Redang, Terengganu, Pulau Tioman and Pulau Tinggi, both islands in Johor, As a result, it decided to close off areas which recorded coral bleaching of between 51 and 100 per cent. In Pulau Payar alone, the damage to coral is estimated at between 60% and 90%. The department said it would limit the number of visitors to Pulau Payar from 400 to 200 daily if the problem persists.
Coral bleaching happened worldwide in 1998 and 2006 due to the El Nino phenomena. It is a condition where the coral changes color from greening brown to pale white. The death of symbiotic algae named zooxanthellae inside the corals, which gives it nutrients and produces the color pigments, would cause the corals to become white. This time, it is more significant and widespread due to global warming. It happened when the sea water temperature rose by 2 degree Centigrade to 28 - 29 degree Centigrade and remained for four weeks. After being continuously exposed to high temperatures, the corals starts to die off. To offset the coral bleaching, the department is building artificial reefs and do coral transplants.
The coral reefs here are made up of soft corals with its magnificent colors and sheer diversity, and an abundance of hard corals like Boulder which is like its namesake, Staghorn which is shaped like deer antlers and Brain corals. The colours of the exotic reef fishes are particularly captivating like somebody painted them from every colour of the rainbow with unique strips, spots and dots on them. These coral reefs take thousands of years to develop and they are one of our national treasures.
